UK: Homes evacuated and schools closed after wild weather sweeps country

Torrential downpours swept Britain for a second day, causing flooding in the heart of a historic market town and creating chaos on one of the country’s busiest train lines.

• Parts of Scotland cut off from England by rail as services are cancelled
• Morpeth town centre flooded
• More than 100 homes evacuated
• Two babies among those killed in accidents caused by strong winds
• Month’s rain falls in 24 hours; more torrential downpours predicted

About 90 people were evacuated from their homes in Morpeth, Northumberland, after a river broke its banks and breached the town’s flood defences.

The heavy rain also led to major disruption on railways and roads across northern England and Wales, with the East Coast Main Line linking London and Scotland closed south of Darlington because of flooding and parts of the A1 in north-east England left impassable.

More than 200 properties in England and Wales have been flooded since yesterday, the Environment Agency said.

Some parts of the country have seen more than a month’s rain fall in 24 hours, and with more heavy rain on the way, further flooding is likely as the water moves down rivers over the next two days.
