San Antonio airport evacuated amid ‘bomb threat’

Planes grounded at San Antonio International Airport, Texas 1 August 2012The international airport in San Antonio, Texas, has evacuated passengers and begun searching its terminal buildings after a bomb threat.

Flights were placed on hold after what Reuters news agency reported as a “very specific threat” by phone.

The airport was evacuated by 14:35 (19:35 GMT) and officials have told people to stay away from the area.

An airport official could not confirm a local news report that three suspicious packages were being examined.

However, local news sources are reporting that dogs trained to detect bombs raised suspicions over three cars in an airport car park, indicating there could be explosives inside.

Fire Department Spokeswoman Deborah Foster said she did not yet know whether the emergency team sent to the airport found any suspicious packages, the Associated Press reported.

Meanwhile, local news stations said passengers were being taken to a nearby high school while the search was under way.
