The Book of Jezebel: An Abortion ‘Joke’ Book

A new book, titled The Book of Jezebel, edited by feminist website Jezebel creator Anna Holmes, uses humor to demonize children and anyone who is pro-life.

The book calls children a side-effect of sex, babies a potentially life-threatening condition like AIDS, and provides this warning to women who use the “morning after pill”: “Be careful! The women who take these, ‘have been painted as sluts and abortionists by social conservatives.'”

The book defines misogyny thusly: “Exemplified by God, Aristotle, Phyllis Schlafly, Rush Limbaugh, The Republican Party, Allen West.”

Nephews, the book says, are “a good reminder to use birth control.” Condoms are “a must-have accessory for protection against two potentially life-threatening conditions: AIDS (among other STIs) and babies.” But the book loses the humor when it talks about abortion, which it calls “a safe and legal way to end an unwanted pregnancy.” The term pro-life, the book says, is “objectively bogus.” Holmes is the newest contributor to the New York Times Sunday Book Review.

The book has been plugged and praised all across the mainstream media. Time Magazine featured an “exclusive excerpt,” which was introduced by Ms. Holmes herself; The Daily Beast praised the book as a  “coffee table bible for middle-class feminists everywhere”; USA Today enjoyed the “encyclopedic tome filled with hilarious, female-centric definitions on everything from popular movies, to virginity, to acne,” and NPR featured three positive reviews written by three different people.
