FBI Pursuing Potential Muslim Extremists in U.S. Military

(multimedia) In an NPR exclusive, sources say the FBI has looked into more than 100 cases of suspected Muslim extremists within the U.S. military including a dozen cases classified as serious enough for further investigation. NPR’s Dina-Temple Raston says the bureau revealed the details of their investigation to Congressional leaders behind closed doors late last year.

“The FBI declined to confirm the numbers for us because they said they’re classified but officials familiar with the tally confirmed that the numbers we have are correct. What we don’t know is if those numbers have changed dramatically since December.”
Chair of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, Senator Joe Liberman, tells NPR he was surprised because the numbers were larger than he expected. He went on to say:
“I know one can say that as a percentage of the millions of people in active military service or working with contractors, the numbers you talk about are a small percentage of the total, but the reality is it only took one man, Nidal Hasan, to kill 13 people at Fort Hood and injure a lot more.”
