Protests in Chile

ROUGH CUT – NO REPORTER NARRATION STORY: Chilean police used tear gas and a water cannon to break up another day of protests in Santiago on Friday (November 18) as thousands of students and teachers took the streets. Police drove a water cannon truck into the heart of the march, sending hundreds of students running. Armed with rocks and Molotov cocktails, hooded students fought back against the armored vehicle. The protesters also tore down fencing and used it as a barricade. Friday’s massive march and consequent clashes have become commonplace in Santiago, where students have been protesting to demand a major overhaul of the education system. They say the system is profit-motivated and provides poor education, accusing unpopular President Sebastian Pinera of misspending the fortune of a copper price boom. Talks between students and education officials have repeatedly failed. Students recently rejected Pinera’s latest budget proposal and show no sign of letting up on demonstrations.
