Dr. Ben Carson’s Welfare Critique Earns Enthusiastic Response on The View

On “The View” Tuesday, Dr. Ben Carson received an enthusiastic response from the audience—and one of the hosts—after comments about the destructive nature of our current welfare system.

Carson explained to the hosts his critical position on welfare, arguing that it was ultimately hurting the poor more than helping them.

When you rob someone of their incentive to go out there and improve themselves, you are not doing them any favors. When you take somebody and pat them on the head and say, “There there, you poor little thing… Let me give you housing subsidies, let me give you free health care because you can’t do that.” What would be much more empowering is to use our intellect and our resources to give those people a way up and out.

Many in the crowd applauded and even one of the hosts, actor Terry Crews, joined in, saying, “I agree.”

Whoopi Goldberg responded by citing her own experience as a welfare mother and arguing that the system inherently encouraged people to move out of it:

I don’t feel bad about being a welfare mother because I contribute as an American. Because the welfare system is so bizarre, you can’t work, they don’t allow you to work because they take the money from you. So if we fix the system so that it doesn’t hurt the people, maybe they’ll get better.

Carson is a retired neurosurgeon who has signaled recently that he is strongly considering a run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. During the conversation on “The View,” he suggested that while he did not want to run, he might if a viable conservative candidate did not emerge.
