23 Percent Rise in Anti-Semitic Incidents in Netherlands

A Jewish watchdog group in the Netherlands has reported a 23 percent rise in the number of anti-Semitic incidents in the country since 2012.

The website JTA.org reports that the Centre for Information and Documentation on Israel (CIDI), recorded 147 anti-Semitic incidents in 2013, compared to 114 in 2012.

The group report that verbal assaults on Jews rose from 14 to 21, three incidents involved direct physical violence and there were 11 incidents of anti-Semitic bullying at schools.

The biggest form of abuse was over Twitter, where there were 57 incidents of abusive messages that violated laws against incitement to hatred and violence.

The group said in a statement: “CIDI finds the increase all the more disconcerting because it is partly caused by frequent confrontations between victims and perpetrators.”

In one incident, a resident of a home in Rotterdam performed a Nazi salute against a Jewish woman who lived in the same home. He said that he was friends with Hitler and told the woman: “They forgot to gas you”.

He then grabbed a Star of David pendant she was wearing, pulled her to him and bit her in front of a witness.

He later apologised after the incident was reported to the police.
