Planned Parenthood Votes, a federal SuperPAC run by the nation’s biggest abortion provider, has spent nearly all of its cash on ads slamming Virginia’s pro-life Republican gubernatorial candidate, Ken Cuccinelli.
According to LifeSiteNews, Planned Parenthood Votes reported Friday that it spent nearly $1.1 million on a new anti-Cuccinelli ad purchase that left the SuperPAC with only $73,746 to pay its remaining bills totaling $59,919.
Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, has called Cuccinelli’s defeat her “top priority.”
Working closely with Democrat candidate Terry McAuliffe, who last week told students at George Mason University that he will be a “brick wall” against any limits on late-term abortions in Virginia, Planned Parenthood has produced ads and mailings that have characterized Cuccinelli as an extremist for his pro-life position and his determination to end public funding of the abortion giant.
Planned Parenthood’s mailings have referred to Cuccinelli as “extremely dangerous for women” because he sought restrictions on abortion-on-demand as attorney general, and for his vote, as a state senator, to overturn former Democrat Gov. Mark Warner’s veto of the partial birth abortion ban.
Cuccinelli also drafted Virginia’s parental consent law and demanded that the state’s abortion facilities meet the same health standards as other surgical centers.
Planned Parenthood has also worked with the McAuliffe campaign to launch a website entitled “Keep Ken Out,” the purpose of which is to attack Cuccinelli for his pro-life views.
Many statements on the Keep Ken Out website are purposefully misleading, at best, including one that claims, “Even contraception would be at risk in a Cuccinelli administration,” implying that Cuccinelli has already tried or plans to promote regulations to outlaw contraception.
The website also makes the statement that “access to safe and legal abortion” would be in “danger” if Cuccinelli is elected governor. While abortion in the United States is “legal,” it is arguable that the current standards are by no means “safe.” Evidence of this includes the recent murder conviction of abortionist Kermit Gosnell and a report less than two weeks ago of an abortion facility in Falls Church, Virginia that was forced to send two women to the hospital following botched abortions.
Falls Church Healthcare filed a challenge in June to Virginia’s new health and safety standards for abortion facilities. Last year’s inspection report of the facility described safety violations that included bloody, reused vacutainer holders, blood-stained walls and operating tables, and no policy for reporting patient deaths.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, said:
Terry McAuliffe has pledged to be a brick wall when it comes to keeping abortion facilities like Falls Church Healthcare open, no matter the cost to women’s health. McAuliffe recently claimed he would have the authority as Governor to issue a “guidance opinion” to keep these dangerous clinics running. Although no such legality exists, this was just another example of how Terry McAuliffe puts Big Abortion ahead of safety and wellbeing of Virginia women.
Dannenfelser said it is McAuliffe who is the extremist when it comes to his platform of support for unrestricted abortion–including sex selection abortions–and abortions for teenage girls without parental consent.
“Should McAuliffe be elected Governor, he would turn a blind eye to women’s safety in order to keep abortion facilities like Falls Church Healthcare in business,” she said.
Ashley McGuire and Maureen Ferguson of The Catholic Association agree that McAuliffe is the extremist on the issue of abortion.
“This week Terry McAuliffe admitted he is an extremist on abortion,” said McGuire in a statement. “His shocking support for the brutal practice of late-term abortion is a decidedly anti-woman position. Polls consistently show that women want less abortion, not more, and support bans on late-term abortion.”
Ferguson said McAuliffe has “proven once and for all that he is an extremist, out of touch with overwhelming majorities of Americans who do not support late-term abortion.”
While Planned Parenthood and McAuliffe may need to make abortion their “top priority” in order to succeed, Cuccinelli has been focused on how he will lead Virginia as governor in the age of ObamaCare.
Cuccinelli, who was the first state attorney general to challenge ObamaCare’s constitutionality, gave the weekly Republican address this week, calling the ObamaCare rollout “a national embarrassment.”
