UK: Trail of destruction as floods spread north

Torrential rain has caused disruption to road and rail networks across the country, with floods continuing to leave a trail of destruction as they spread north.

Across the country, the bad weather has caused transport chaos. Closures and delays were affecting many A-roads as well as rail services and even ferries.

By 1pm today, the AA had attended more than 7,000 breakdowns, including 161 cars either driven through, or stuck in, flood water.

In Yorkshire, a hospital was forced to cancel all planned surgery as a nearby water channel overflowed, while rail lines in the South East suffered during morning rush-hour with delays and cancellations.

Brittany Ferries’ sailing from Bilbao to Portsmouth was delayed due to bad conditions.

Around 300 flood warnings were issued in England and Wales earlier this morning. However, by mid-morning, the number had been reduced to 212. Almost 300 flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible, still apply.
