Egyptian Election Results Postponed

Egypt’s election officials have postponed announcing the results of the presidential runoff election. Sky News explains.

“The authorities say the results won’t be for several days, because they need more time to study appeals. The move has raised tensions among voters and candidates.”

This delay is the latest snag in the troubled electoral contest between Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, and regime holdover Ahmed Shafik. BBC’s Jon Leyne reports, the Commission’s hesitancy to announce the results might indicate a Brotherhood victory.

“It’s very clear that those in authority are nervous in the extreme about allowing the Brotherhood to take power. It really is looking as if Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood has got the most votes.”

Reactions from both campaigns following the announcement were mixed. Al Jazeerareports, while the Brotherhood has accused the electoral committee of stalling in an attempt to rig the election, Shafik’s campaign is taking a different approach.
