(multimedia) A global survey revealed more people believe China is now the world’s leading economic superpower, not the United States.
According to a Pew Research Center poll, 41 percent of respondents from 21 countries ranked China first in terms of worldwide economic influence. Forty-one percent favored the U.S.
Although China beat out the U.S. by a small margin, the difference was much wider in a 2008 survey asking the same question. Among the 14 nations that participated in both studies, 45 percent placed the U.S. on top in 2008 and only 22 percent felt China was the world’s economic power.
“Over the last few years, perceptions about the global economic balance of power have been shifting,” Pew said in the report.
Europe has especially changed its view of the United States. In Britain, 58 percent of participants saw China as the leading economy, versus just 28 percent for the United States.
The Pew survey also showed people in the U.S. and Japan have a lower opinion of China than in previous years.
