(multimedia) BELLEVUE, Wash. — A Bellevue fertility clinic is causing some controversy with an advertisement that states, ‘Families can choose if they want to have a boy or a girl.’ The ad was published in a British Columbia newspaper, the Indo-Canadian Voice.
Dr. James Kustin with Washington Center for Reproductive Medicine told King 5 news that the clinic is not doing anything illegal. Dr. Kustin would not offer any comment beyond that, but others in the medical community are speaking out.
“I am not surprised that someone is offering gender selection, but I was taken back that it was advertised,” said Dr. Lora Shahine who works at Pacific NW Fertility. “It’s considered ethically controversial.”
Washington Center for Reproductive Medicine’s ad states, “Create the family you want, boy or girl.” It was inside a newspaper that is marketed toward the Indo-Canadian community. Pockets of that community can tend to show a preference toward boys, according to activist Raminder Dosanjh with the India Mahila Association.
“You are going to internalize that discrimination, and you are going to start believing there is something wrong,” Dosanjh told BCTV.
